Cybersecurity Books Worth Your Time
A curated collection of the books I most often recommend to students, practitioners, security leaders, and anyone interested in cybersecurity. These aren’t every cybersecurity book I’ve read. They’re the ones I believe are worth your time.
If you’re only going to read five cybersecurity books, I’d start with these.
Why it’s on my list:
One of the best books for understanding the business of cybercrime. Brian Krebs shows that behind every phishing email and malware campaign is a sophisticated criminal economy driven by profit.
Count Down to Zero Day by Kim Zetter
Why it’s on my list: The definitive account of Stuxnet and the dawn of the cyber weapon era. It explains how software vulnerabilities became instruments of national power and changed cybersecurity forever.
No Place to Hide by Glenn Greenwald
Why it’s on my list: An insider’s account of Edward Snowden’s NSA disclosures and the debate they sparked about surveillance, privacy, and civil liberties. Whether you agree with Snowden or not, this book provides essential context for understanding modern cybersecurity policy.
The Perfect Weapon by David E. Sanger
Why it’s on my list: A compelling look at how cyber operations have become a core element of modern geopolitics. It connects major cyber incidents to the broader strategic competition between nations and explains why cybersecurity now extends far beyond technology.
The Cuckoo’s Egg
by Cliff Stoll
A timeless true story that demonstrates the curiosity, persistence, and investigative thinking at the heart of cybersecurity. While the technology has changed dramatically since the 1980s, the lessons about following the evidence, understanding your adversary, and never overlooking the details remain just as relevant today.
